As October is Domestic Violence Awareness month, I thought I would post the Power and Control Wheel. We often only recognize abuse when it is becomes violent, but abuse begins with manipulation and control.
As you can see, this tool was developed with a very traditional heterosexual and, likely, cisgender couple in mind due to statistics; however, women can also be perpetrators of abuse and violence, and abuse can occur in LGBTQ relationships, too. Intimate partner violence occurs in all kinds of relationships. You may even recognize aspects of power and control issues in friendships and other family relationships.
If you’re ever worried about someone being in an unhealthy relationship, be supportive and educate yourself on how to be there for them and keep in mind the Relationship Bill of Rights to recognize red flags.
