THIRSTY THURSDAY TINY WINE POST: South African Wines

As our readers may have noticed, we post a lot more about wine on Kretch’s Kitchen than we do about food. We’ll get there. (I just kind of love obsessing about wine more). While Kretch works on his recipes, I’m running out of ways to say, “HEY, I’m going to talk about wine now.” So here’s my newest kind of wine post — the Thirsty Thursday Tiny Wine Post. This means I missed Wine Wednesday, and I have a bigger post in the making — but in the meantime, please enjoy this short list of vinos. Today, we are in Stellenbosch, South Africa! (Do I sound buzzed? I hope so!)

WP_20150723_0022014 DeMorgenzon Maestro White, Stellenbosch:

A light wood scent — almost cotton — nose with heat from the start. An exotic zinging flavor that Ms. K called “dried stinging nettle” (as a descriptor, not as an actual taste — who would really eat that?!) Malbeca — the expert carnivore — identified a meaty finish after aeration with swishy chewing.

2012 Kanonkop Kadette Red, Stellenbosch:

All dark earthiness in the Kadette. Musty, an almost rubbery, nose from leathery oak. Dark fruit: cherry, plum, blackberry. Described by the rep as the “quintessential South African red.”

WP_20150723_0062012 Glenelly Cabernet Sauvignon, Stellenbosch:

This was Malbeca’s favorite. Unlike the others, this wine was greener with a vegetal flavor and green pepper throughout.

Happy Thirsty Thursday! Enjoy a not-so-tiny glass of wine!
